GE HealthCare announces time-saving AI tool for doctors who treat cancer

In this article, GE HealthCare announced a new artificial intelligence application on Monday designed to assist doctors in diagnosing and treating cancer more efficiently. The tool, known as CareIntellect for Oncology, aims to provide oncologists with quick access to patient data, enabling them to focus on patient care rather than sifting through records.

Health-care data analysis is challenging, with up to 97% of hospital-generated data remaining unused, as reported by Deloitte. This data is stored in various formats across different vendors, making it burdensome for doctors to navigate through images, lab results, clinical notes, and device readings.

Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, GE HealthCare’s global chief science and technology officer, highlighted the time-consuming and frustrating nature of this process for clinicians. CareIntellect for Oncology can summarize clinical reports, track patient adherence to treatment plans, and identify relevant clinical trials for eligible patients, thus streamlining the workflow for oncologists.

The application is set to be available to U.S. customers in 2025, initially focusing on prostate and breast cancers. GE HealthCare plans to introduce more apps under the CareIntellect brand in the future, allowing health organizations to choose the tools that suit their needs.

Additionally, GE HealthCare is developing other AI products, including a team of AI agents, a tool for predicting breast cancer recurrence, and a system to expedite the review of mammography scans. The company aims to collaborate with health-care organizations and regulators to refine these tools and enhance patient care standards.

One of the upcoming tools, Health Companion, will utilize AI agents trained in specific medical domains to provide insights and support to doctors promptly. This concept aims to offer immediate expert guidance to doctors, similar to consulting a multidisciplinary team, but without the delays associated with traditional consultations.

GE HealthCare’s vision is to enhance patient care standards and alleviate the burden on clinicians by leveraging AI technology effectively. The company is committed to advancing AI applications in health care to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
