In this article, discount carrier Frontier Airlines is expanding its service in New York by introducing new nonstop routes to major American Airlines hubs, offering fares starting at less than $20. The airline is set to commence service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Miami International Airport on March 30.
A roundtrip flight departing on April 1 and returning a week later was listed at $38 on Frontier’s website for a basic ticket, excluding a seat assignment or carry-on bag, and is nonrefundable. In comparison, the same trip on American Airlines for those dates, which includes a carry-on bag, nonalcoholic beverage, and snack, was priced at $142.
Although Frontier has a base in Miami, the airport is primarily controlled by American Airlines. Additionally, Frontier will be launching flights between New York’s Kennedy Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth four times a week, starting April 22. Furthermore, on May 1, the airline plans to initiate daily nonstop flights between JFK and Los Angeles International Airport.
According to analytics firm Cirium, Frontier holds less than a 1% market share of the capacity from the three main airports serving the New York City area. Frontier introduced JFK service last June and with the upcoming additions this spring, it will operate eight flights out of the airport.
Frontier has expressed optimism about its expansion and aims to achieve double-digit profit margins by around mid-2025. The ultra-low-cost carrier’s shares have risen by 17% since the beginning of the year, and it has revised its fourth-quarter outlook from potentially breaking even to a 4% pretax margin.
