Delta pauses hot meal service on dozens of Detroit flights citing ‘food safety issue’ at caterer

In this article, Delta Air Lines had to suspend hot meal service on more than 200 flights departing from its Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport hub due to a “food safety issue” in the past few days. Delta mentioned that operations at the facility were halted, and hot food services would be handled by other kitchens.

According to Delta, a recent inspection at a DTW kitchen revealed a food safety concern, leading to the immediate shutdown of hot food production and the suspension of all activities at the facility. The airline stated that hot food and other onboard provisions would now be managed from alternative facilities.

A message sent to a flight crew on Friday informed them that first-class meals could not be loaded due to an “unforeseen supply chain issue,” and the flight would be stocked with extra snacks instead. The Food and Drug Administration did not provide immediate comments on the matter when requested on Sunday.

Delta confirmed that there were no reports of employee or customer illnesses related to the incident. Affected customers were offered travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles as compensation for the inconvenience caused.

Airlines typically serve numerous meals to passengers daily, often sourced from third-party catering kitchens. Do & Co., a catering partner of Delta, did not provide an immediate response to the situation.

In July, a Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam had to divert to New York due to a complaint about spoiled chicken, resulting in the airline limiting meal options to pasta on certain flights for a few days.
