CNN announces about 200 layoffs as it attempts to modernize business

Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN has announced a reduction of approximately 6% of its workforce, equivalent to about 210 employees, as it shifts its focus towards a global digital audience. CNN CEO Mark Thompson confirmed the job cuts in a memo to staff, stating that the company plans to invest $70 million in new digital initiatives to offset the impact of the layoffs. Thompson acknowledged the significant impact on affected individuals but emphasized the necessity of adapting to ensure future success.

The restructuring at CNN involves adjustments to its linear TV programming and the development of digital subscription offerings. The layoffs aim to streamline production costs and consolidate teams, potentially relocating certain shows from New York or Washington to Atlanta for more cost-effective production. Notably, the job cuts are not expected to affect CNN’s prominent on-air personalities who are under contract. CNN currently employs around 3,500 staff globally.

In addition to the layoffs, CNN revealed plans for new digital initiatives, including a separate streaming service for digital subscribers outside of CNN Max. The company aims to introduce more details about its content offerings in the upcoming months. Despite the initial plan to launch CNN+ in 2022, the service was canceled by the newly appointed CEO, Chris Licht. CNN introduced a digital paywall in October, with a goal of achieving $1 billion in revenue by 2030.

Looking ahead, CNN intends to hire over 100 new employees to bolster its digital presence, focusing on product development, technology, and enhancing journalistic content. The network is also revamping its linear TV schedule, introducing new morning shows, extending existing programs, and reshuffling time slots for popular shows like “The Situation Room” and “The Lead.”

NBC News is also reportedly planning job cuts, with the exact number expected to be fewer than 50. Both CNN and NBC News delayed their restructuring announcements until after the U.S. presidential inauguration. The evolving media landscape, marked by a shift towards digital platforms and social media for news consumption, underscores the need for news organizations to adapt to changing audience preferences.
